Liquid highlighters are one of my favorite products to instantly brighten the complexion and add a dewy glow. More and more brands have come out with liquid illuminators following the launch of the Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops. While enormously successful and gorgeous on the skin, this highlight will set you back $42. So I set out to see if I could find a dupe in Maybelline’s FaceStudio Master Strobing Liquid Illuminating Highlighter.
The Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops come in 9 shades and retail for $42. Seven of those shades are highlighters and two are matte bronzers. The dropper allows you to distribute the perfect amount of product onto the skin or as a foundation mix-in. My favorite shade is sunlight, which gives a soft golden glow to the skin when bounced in with a beauty blender. I also swatched moonlight, a soft silver glow.
At $9.99, the Maybelline liquid highlighter costs a lot less than the Cover FX drops. However, there are only two shades. I have the shade light/iridescent. This shade is comparable to Cover FX moonlight, but more pink. However, the texture is not the same. It is a lot thicker than the Cover FX drops so I don’t like it as much as a foundation mix-in. It is also harder to seamlessly blend in to the skin. You can see the difference in formula from the swatches below.
If you are looking for an alternative to the Cover FX drops, I would recommend the Maybelline Master Strobe Liquid Highlighter. However, you can see from the swatches that they are not complete dupes.
