Battle of the Drugstore Liquid Lipsticks

You know what makes a liquid lipstick even better?  When it is a drugstore price.  But since drugstores don’t have testers and it is harder to make returns, it is difficult to decide on what formula to go for.

(From left to right-Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Color in Devotion, Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color in Berry Boost, L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss in Aphrodite Kiss, Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in Milan, Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Bumble)

So, I tested out five different liquid lipsticks: Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color, Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream, Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Color, L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss, Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip.  From worst to best:

5. Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Color ($8.99 for 0.2 oz)

The Shade: Devotion, a soft pink.  Could have been more opaque on the first swipe.  There are a total of 16 shades.

The Scent: Mix of Mango and Vanilla.  To me, it just smelled sickly sweet and I didn’t really like it.  You can’t smell it when it is on your lips though.

The Applicator: Flattened triangle, medium length, plush.  I would much prefer a doe foot over this flatter applicator which makes it harder to apply.

The Formula: Wax-free gel.  I feel like this clings to dry patches and accentuates lip texture the most out of the formulas I tried.  Fairly matte, non-drying, lasts a decent amount of time, and dries down after a few minutes.

The Rating: 2.5/5

4. Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color ($7.99 for 0.26 oz)

The Shade: 40 Berry Boost, a bright hot pink mixed with red.  Medium coverage color, but can be built up.  There are a total of 10 shades.

The Scent: A mix of chemicals and florals.  Not appealing.

The Applicator: Long flat stick.  My least favorite applicator, very difficult to use.

The Formula: Creamy, liquid base that glides on smoothly for a thin coat.  Very hydrating and doesn’t accentuate lip texture.  Takes a long time to dry.

The Rating: 3.5/5

3. L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss ($9.99 for 0.21 oz)

The Shade: 306 Aphrodite Kiss, a bright pink with a touch of red.  Very bold color intensity.  There is a total of 10 shades.

The Scent: Fruity.  One of the best scents, but would prefer no scent.

The Applicator: Pro-Sculpt Applicator.  Rounded at the base, pointed at the top with a hole in the middle to hold the right amount of product.  Very easy to use, one of my favorite applicators.

The Formula: Velvet matte gloss.  Never fully dries down to a matte.  Very comfortable and hydrating.  Wears off quicker because it doesn’t dry down.

The Rating: 4/5

2. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream ($5.99 for 0.27 oz)

The Shade: Milan, a soft pink.  There are a total of 23 shades.

The Scent: Sweet like vanilla frosting. Not as strong as Revlon, but I still don’t like it.

The Applicator: Doe foot.  Easy and simple to use.

The Formula: Creamy and silky with a soft matte finish.  Non-drying, but not moisturizing either.  Does sink in to fine lines a little bit.

The Rating: 4.25/5

1. Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip ($6 for 0.11 oz)

The Shade: Bumble, a dusty warm terracotta.  Very opaque colors.  Currently 47 shades, but changes often.

The Scent: No added scent.  Very very faint makeup smell.

The Applicator: Easy to use doe foot.

The Formula: Very liquidy so dries down the quickest.  Most drying out of all the ones tested and does show lip texture.  Most matte, most long lasting, most even, bold pigmentation.

The Rating: 4.5/5

Overall, Colourpop wins for me.  However, if your lips get dry easily or you don’t like how liquid lipsticks can be drying, I would go with NYX and you would still have a great shade selection.  If you are looking for the most moisturizing and don’t care about the matte finish, L’Oreal is the way to go.  It really depends on personal preference.  But for me, Colourpop has the greatest shade selection, dries down to the most matte finish quickest, and keeps bold pigmentation for the longest time.
