High End Makeup Products Worth the Hype?

This summer, I decided to do a three part “worth the hype” series to delve into some products that are constantly showered with praise.  I decided to start with the high end edition, but don’t worry, drugstore and luxury editions will be coming soon.  Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss those and let’s get into this high end makeup products worth the hype post!

makeup products worth the hype

Benefit Cosmetics – The POREfessional Face Primer

The Claims : minimizes the appearance of pores and fine lines, helps makeup stay put

Worth the hype?  This primer really does smooth out the skin and keeps makeup in place longer because of the even canvas it creates.  However, this primer costs $31 and many suggest that there are drugstore dupes.  If you are looking for a face primer like this for less money, I suggest checking out Maybelline’s Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser ($7.00) or NYX’s Pore Filler Face Primer ($14.00).  Overall, it meets the claims, but is a little overhyped because there are similar products for less.

Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer

The Claims : smooths and blurs skin, helps makeup last longer

Worth the hype? This primer definitely delivers on blurring the skin.  I also love that they have a whole bunch of primers to target specific issues such as color correcting, minimizing pores, adding radiance, evening skin tone, hydrating, and protecting with SPF.  I have the original one which costs $36.  Again, I don’t think you need to splurge on primers because I think drugstore options offer similar results.  Like the Porefessional, I do like this primer and would recommend it if you have the money to spend, but I don’t think it’s an item that you have to purchase.

Too Faced The Chocolate Bar Eye Palette

The Claims : pigmented, smooth eye shadows

high end makeup products worth the hype

Worth the hype? This was my first ever high end eyeshadow palette.  First of all, it smells like chocolate which is delicious.  It also has a small mirror and 16 shadows.  There are browns, neutrals, two larger highlighting shades, and some pops of color.   The matte browns are pretty and easy to blend. Unfortunately, at $49, this palette is just a little lacking in the shimmer department.  Many of the shimmers do not have the intensity I am looking for and some (especially the purple) have a lot of glittery fall-out. The champagne shade called marzipan is an exception and is beautifully pigmented.  However, it wears away over the course of the day even with a primer.  Because of this, I reluctantly say this palette is not worth the extreme hype it gets.  It is a good palette, but it isn’t exceptional. Let me know in the comments down below if you would like to see further swatches, thoughts, or tutorials on this palette.

Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Concealer

The Claims : good for contouring and highlighting, long wearing, full coverage, lightweight and blendable

Worth the hype?  This concealer is extremely hyped, but that is all for a reason.  This is the best concealer I have personally ever tried.  It absolutely delivers on its full coverage claim.  I love the big tapered wand applicator and it isn’t cakey at all.  However, I don’t think it’s necessary to buy multiples for contouring and highlighting.  I would just buy one to use as a concealer. Lastly, this concealer can fall into some fine lines so it is important to just use a little bit.  That’s all you need anyway!  Priced at $25, this is 100% worth the hype in my opinion.

Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow

The Claims : long-wearing, incredible luster, dries down smoothly with minimal fallout

Worth the hype? YES.  YES.  And more YES.  I have 2 of the 10 glitter finishes.  They also have 4 metallic finishes and 3 duo chromes.  The shadows glide on effortlessly.  The only thing is that you can’t blend after they dry down because they will flake off if you try to move them around.  I use a glitter glue with them and have had no problems whatsoever with fallout.  They retain their gorgeous sparkle throughout the day and are striking.  At $24 they are a little pricey, but I highly recommend picking up at least one.

And that concludes my high end makeup products worth the hype post!  I was super harsh on these products, but that is only because I want to be completely honest with my readers and only recommend the absolute best. • Thank you so much! I highly recommend that liquid eyeshadow. I doubt you will be disappointed

  1. This is a great post! I really love the idea; all the hyped up products are so tempting to buy, so it’s nice to get a REAL opinion before indulging xx

    • I agree! I love to read these posts because social media can hype up a product, but I want to know if it is actually the best or if the hype will die down when a new product comes. Thanks so much for your comment. It means a lot!

    • It’s really good. It is so full coverage without being cakey or hard to blend. If that is what you are looking for, then I absolutely recommend it!

    • I really recommend getting one. I haven’t found anything else with the same color intensity and glittery shine for a less expensive price. But I will definitely stay on the lookout because it would be amazing if the drugstore could put out a product like this! Thanks so much for your comment
